Helen & Joey Estate

The Yarra Valley is located 45 km north east of Melbourne, and is world renowned for its ability to produce premium wines with elegance.

The area offers visitors an ideal escape from Melbourne with a plethora of great activities and attractions all within an hour from Melbourne’s CBD including; fine food, art museums, guided tours, hiking and riding trails, hot air ballooning, you-pick fruit farms, state forests, snow activities and the famous Healesville Sanctuary.

Helen & Joey Estate is located on Spring Lane, Gruyere in the Yarra Valley. This cool climate wine growing region has a tradition of producing premium Cabernet Sauvignon (and Bordeaux blends), Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The cool continental climate, paired with substantial average rainfall provide excellent grape growing conditions.

Purchased in 2010 by Helen and Joey, much passion, hard work and expertise has gone in to producing premium fruit across this stunning 200 acre farm. Grape production is targeted at 200-240 tonne which produces an average of about 20,000 x 12 bottle cases. This is at the larger end of boutique wine production in Australia.

The vineyard planting is split 65% red varieties and 35% white varieties. The reds are Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a very small amount of Shiraz. The is also a small planting of Cabernet Franc, but these vines are so new they are yet to produce fruit.

The whites are predominantly Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, with very small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The winemaking team is led by Meg Brodtmann MW. Meg has the honour of being Australia’s first woman to be awarded their Master of Wine certificate. Meg has many years winemaking experience both in the Yarra Valley as well around the world. Jamie McGlade is vineyard manager and brings with him numerous years experience working in vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Meg and Jamie work closely to ensure the single vineyard estate is capable of producing outstanding wines.

We are proud to offer a fine selection from this James Halliday 5 star rated winery.

Blanc de Blanc

2018 was the first year we have made this wine and we are thrilled with the result.  The grapes were harvested early in the season to ensure low alcohol and high acid in the wine – two elements crucial for balanced sparkling wine.  After a gentle pressing, the juice was fermented at low temperatures to retain the green apple and white nectarine aromas and flavours.

Inara Yarra Valley Blanc de Blanc is the perfect accompaniment for any occasion – celebratory or otherwise.  It can be enjoyed on its own or with oysters topped with a green apple granita

Pinot Noir

Garnet in colour, the wine bursts with aromas of raspberry, strawberries, maraschino cherries and aniseed. Supporting the fresh red berry fruit aromas is the oak with clove and cinnamon. The wine is beautifully structured with fine, velvety tannins and the summer berry fruits continue on the palate. Fine-grained oak is well integrated with the fruit and provides rich vanilla and cinnamon aromas.

Like all great Pinot, the 2017 Inara Pinot noir would be delicious with Asian inspired duck but would be equally at home with barbequed meats.

Chardonnay

The 2018 Inara Chardonnay has layers of complexity on both the nose and the palate. Classic cool climate Chardonnay characteristics of just ripe stone fruit are supported by toasty oak and a hint of toffee. The wine has a textured, creamy mouthfeel and would be perfectly matched with crispy fish tacos.

Cabernet Merlot

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, the aromas and flavours are initially all Merlot – black olive, dark chocolate and plum. The Cabernet Sauvignon reveals itself on the palate with fine grained tannins supporting the cassis, blackberry and stewed mulberry fruit.

It is always delightful to see such youthful expressions of these two grape varieties. Best enjoyed with great company and a big bowl of fettucine with a ragout of beef.
